Islamic Cairo
Islamic Cairo is the historic core of the city. Founded in the 10th century, it became the new centre of the Islamic world, reaching its golden age in the 14th century. Cairo was founded by the Fatimids in 969 who subsequently turned it into a royal enclosure, not far from Futstat, which had by then been adopted as the country’s economic capital. The area grew to become the regional center for Islam, and as a result, several mosques and other Islamic monuments were constructed. Because of that it is known as Islamic Cairo.
Islamic Cairo is home of the oldest mosque in the entire African continent : the Mosque of Amr ibn al - As built in 642 A.D, and Amr Ibn Al-As he is the first one who settled Egypt. The Fatimids founded the Al - Azhar University , the second oldest university of the world still operating since 988 A.D.
